Finished my last day of Insanity today..whew..
You can do insanity in your 50's if you are in moderate shape. I will turn 59 in 2 weekss and just finished the Insanity program yesterday. Let me give a few of my experiences and deductions if you are older and considering this program.
First, the results exceeded my expectations. I started out at 185lbs, 5' 8" tall, BMI at 28, and on high blood pressure medicine as BP was 160/105 without it. Here is my Insanity history.
Started out in June, doing every other day with a friend who is obese (over 30 BMI). It was too hard for me to do every day. After 2 weeks my friend punked out and I was on my own. I decided to commit to the program and started over, following the schedule and changing eating habits.
I did the first month of the program for 6 weeks because after a month, I still couldn't complete the workouts. After 6 weeks I could, did the recovery week and on to month two. Month 2 is a bit harder, but if you can complete the workouts in month one you can do month two. I EARNED IT!.
Just as the results exceeded my expectations, The program is harder than you can ever imagine.
The word "commitment" wasn't in my vocabulary. You have to commit to this unlike anything you have ever done. Stick to the schedule.. don't miss a day.
Finally, don't expect significant results unless you change your diet. It's true, " a great workout, can't beat a bad diet." I went from a big one meal a day and late night eater to 4 meals a day, "Paleo" type diet with a 500 calorie deficit/day. Do recovery drinks. I recommend Champion Nutrition's original chocolate ultramet http://www.supplementwarehouse.com/brand.asp?brand=52&Criteria=ultramet&Search=Go%21&pxc=1&sh=1 It's cheaper than the Shakology stuff, has more protein, and tastes great (use blender). Also, check out the book "Wheat Belly" by Dr. Davis. Have been wheat free for 2 months, great results.
Here are my final results after completing the program (which took me 11 weeks. 6 weeks month one, two weeks additional month one, one week recovery, and 4 weeks month 2).
Weight : 185 lbs to 163 lbs
BMI: 28.1 to 24.8
Body fat % : 28% to 20% (actually gained muscle mass, ya, some real arm and stomach striations showing).
MIND BLOWING! I have been totally off my blood pressure medicine for 6 weeks and my BP is consistently at 130/75. That effect in itself was worth the pain.
Fit test results: first week last week (yesterday)
Switch kicks 100 167
Squat jacks 30 60
Knee pulls 65 110
Power jumps 24 49
Globe jumps 5 12
Suicide jumps 11 25
Push up jacks 11 38
Low plank oblique 40 84
So that's it. Old man bad ass here..Good luck.. it's hard, commit, do it.
